In this preview, Kathy Roth Douquet, Founder and CEO of Blue Star Families, provides suggestions for addressing the civilian-military gap in the United States. Inclusion of the ROTC program in universities contributes to a better relationship between civilians and the military community.

More from Kathy Roth Douquet on Blue Star Families and how they bridge the civilian-military gap:

” If you don’t know someone, how do you do it? Well, we make that easier. So we engage with the country in a lot of ways. One is that we make partnerships with people who don’t usually partner with the military. For instance, the museum and culture community, because these are nontraditional allies and because we believe in  the power of culture, we asked the museums for the national endowment for the arts to  make themselves free to military families over the summer each year and the first year it was 900, this year it was over 1,500 museums around the country participated in the  program. Last year 300,000 family members attended the museums for free. I think it’s going to be over half a million this year, and it was such a popular program. Popular with the families, yes but really popular with the museums who felt so happy to be able to do something and who got to have a face to face connect. If someone came up and gave their military ID and say, I’m here for Blue Star museums and people would say, I’m so glad you came, we’re so happy to have you here. And there’s a connection and there’s an interaction that didn’t happen otherwise. And so we try to do a number of things like that. Another program that we have that really pushes on this concept of service that there is one thing that can bind us all together and that is service, all of us can serve our country.”
